SNOBS
When my two younger sisters and I were in our early 20's, our family lived
in a middle class apartment at the foot of a hill on the top of which could
be found many large houses where rich people lived. My two younger
sisters would ask their boyfriends to drop them off at the top of the hill
when they drove them home and they would then walk down the hill and
return home on foot. It was customary that boys took girls home after a
date in those days.
When I was going out with my boyfriend who later became my husband in
those days, we often had tram-rides, and often sat at the top decker tram
travelling from the western side to the eastern side of Hong Kong Island.
We thoroughly enjoyed the rides because they were economical. But most
important of all, we were deeply in love, and therefore the meeting place
was not important. We often strolled along Nam Sang Wai in the country
side, ie the New Territories, and that was our favourite place for an outing.

We had a common friend when we were in our late teens. He had a crush
on all three of us and would be very happy if any of us went out with him.
When he brought presents for us, he always brought three. But none of us
was charmed by him. Some years later, my second younger sister
became a socialite and would make friends with those who were rich and
famous. One day she met this boy in a restaurant who walked up to her
and said hello. My sister greeted him by saying, 'do I know you’?
